The population of early 19th-century Piermont was prosperous and growing. Farmers, the vast majority of the population, produced a marketable surplus. Just before the Civil War, the population of New England declined precipitously. Why did this happen? Learn how communities reflected a region-wide "abandonment" of hearth and home.
